The old forgings iron crosses, which are available at many cemeteries in Värmland fascinates me a lot and some I looked at the Brunskogs church yesterday. Iron crosses is called the “tree of life”, it is an ancient Christian symbol that resembles that even if people die, take life never ends. I have found information about iron crosses replaced the former wooden cross as a grave ornament, wood rotted down while the iron was. The farmers who supplied the iron mills with coal, often had iron in compensation in lieu of cash. It forged the memorial crosses to loved ones and several villages developed their own styles and decked them with leaves, flowers and flower stalks.
